TriSports Racing has always been dedicated to reducing the impact our events have on the environment. Beginning in 2009, we made a pledge to increase our efforts so that we have as little unusable waste as possible. We’ve got a lot in the works, but here are a few of the things we are already putting in place. Check back for additional efforts we are making toward a sustainable future!
We have submitted our Sustainability Plan to the Council for Responsible Sport. If you would like to view it and see the credits we are pursuing for 2010, please click here.
Composting
We are partnering with the Pinetop-Lakeside Sanitary District to compost everything we possibly can. They will accept all of our food waste, plates, napkins, utensils and cups, plus paper and cardboard. This waste will go through their treatment and become a soil additive
No Print Registration
Mailing in a registration form wastes paper and resources, so we have done away with it! When you sign up online, there are NO ADDITIONAL FEES at checkout, so you do not save anything by mailing it in...in fact, you actually spend a little more because you have to pay for a stamp! Go green with us and register online now!
Reduce your Carbon Footprint
Offset your carbon footprint by using Carbonfund’s calculator to figure out how much carbon you used to get to the race, then make a donation to offset your impact on the environment. Visit their website to learn more, or start calculating now!
Recyclable/Reusable Goods
Thanks to our Sustainability Sponsor, Tater Ware, all plates, utensils and non-aid station cups this year will be a nature based product, meaning they are made from annually renewable resources and are biodegradable, compostable and/or recyclable.
Portable Toilets
Our longtime vendor, Banana Jons, has agreed to use eco products in the toilets they deliver for our use. This waste will also be sent up to Pinetop-Lakeside Sanitary District to be converted into usable soil additive.
Recycling Stations
We will have recycling stations all around our venue that will direct you where to put what kind of waste. Anything that cannot be recycled in the Show Low/Pinetop-Lakeside area will be brought back to Tucson and recycled there.
Digital Packets
We will be sending all of our race information digitally to those athletes signed up in advance. We cannot avoid having some paper on-site for those who sign up at the venue, but this will greatly reduce the amount of paper waste we generate.
Recycled Medals
We have our finisher medals custom made by Resource Revival, a company that specializes in creating art from recycled bicycle parts. Our medals are also a usable item post-race! In the past we have had bottle openers and key chains and they are awesome!
Recycled Shirts
Our shirts will be made from recycled polyester with environmentally friendly inks. Each shirt is made from ten 2-liter plastic bottles! Greenlight Apparel, the awesome company making these shirts, is also a member of 1% For The Planet and they source their apparel from factories that are certified to be child-labor free zones.
